Accomodation in Penang
Usually after choosing the destination for the holiday, the next important step would be to find suitable and affordable accommodation. After all, the accommodation we are going to stay in is going to be our temporary home away from home. Thus it has to be a clean and comfortable “nest” to refresh and also to reenergize our body after each day’s outing.
Penang offers a wide selection of accommodation to suit every budget, from deluxe five-star hotels to budget guesthouses. Most of the hotels are located on the island but there are also a good selection on the mainland strip of Penang, or Seberang Perai as it is known to locals. There are two main locations to choose from - stay in the city within close proximity to the UNESCO heritage site of George Town, the state capital of Penang or in the countryside splendour near the beaches and hills. No matter where you stay, most of Penang's attractions are close at hand. The hustle and bustle of the city to the tranquillity of the beaches are but minutes away. For the more selective traveller who prefer a more refined and luxurious environment, there are a whole range of choices ranging from 3-star hotels to 5-star hotels as well as boutique hotel and beach resorts. In Penang the location of the hotel tends to be evenly spread out. Whether you wish to be in the town area, at the beaches or up in the hills, there are bound to be one that is suitable for you.
In the centre of town, hotels available are The Traders Hotel Penang (under the Shangri-la group) which is located next to the famous KOMTAR building. Nearer to the heritage inner Penang are the Bayview Hotel George Town, Cititel Hotel, Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang and Hotel Continental. These hotels are of within walking distant to key historical and cultural sites, popular eating areas and the night spots of Upper Penang Road, thus saving the need to shuttle up and down. The Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang which has recently undergone major restorations still retains the old colonial charm that was once seen in that era. Another recently refurnished boutique hotel in town would be the Clove Hall, an Edwardian Anglo Malay bungalow.
For those who have private transport and liberty to drive around you can choose to stay slightly at the fringe of the town. The 1926 Heritage Hotel, Berjaya Georgetown Hotel, Hotel Royal Penang and Red Rock Hotel Penang are all of international standard. Sunway Hotel George Town is so strategic located on the famous New Lane, with the night street food stalls just right in front of its main entrance.
Further down the famous promenade Gurney Drive there are three international hotels from one end to the other. The Gurney Resort Hotel and Residences and the Evergreen Laurel Hotel is at one end with the G-Hotel at the other. The G-Hotel is part of the Gurney Plaza Shopping Centre where you find most of the famous international brands outlets. Food is easily available as both restaurants and street food enclaves are within walking distant.
If sun and sand is what you want, then stay right at the beaches. Right from Tanjong Bungah to Batu Ferringhi, there are plenty of hotels available to choose from. International names like Holiday Inn Resort, Grand Plaza Parkroyal Hotel, Rasa Sayang Spa and Resort and Golden Sand Beach Resort have all been there for years serving satisfied tourist from all over the world. Visitors who revisit Penang insist on staying back in these hotels because of the satisfaction of services they receive on their first visit.
For the business travellers who wish to stay near by the Free Trade Zone at Bayan Lepas where most of the major multinational engineering firms are located, the Equatorial Penang Hotel and Vistana Hotel & Residences would be a good choice. Equatorial Penang Hotel is adjacent to the Bukit Jambul golf course, the only course available in the island.
For those who wish to escape from the bustling city life, Penang offers some quiet inland tranquillity lodging. Up in the hills among the famous durian plantations at Balik Pulau, which is at the southern end of the island, there is an exclusive boutique hotel call Malihome. Located in mist of hills, it gives a tranquil and magnificent view of the lowland and the horizon of the great Andaman Sea and the Straits of Malacca. The other up in Penang Hill, Bellevue The Penang Hill Hotel is located 800 meter above sea level which gives a spectacular panoramic view of Georgetown and Strait of Malacca. There is so much to see staying in these two hotels.
Over in mainland, the Sunway Hotel group has one there too. It is called the Sunway Hotel Seberang Prai but it more suitable for business travellers who need to be close to the industrial backbone of Penang.
So planning a Penang holiday with the multi choices of accommodation available is not a hassle after all because Penang has everything. Here is the list of the hotels by location:

Budget Accommodation
Budget hotels provide travellers who are on a tight budget with a basic accommodation without much frills or services at a “budget price”. Penang is no stranger to this concept of accommodation. It started to mushroom in the 60’s and 70’s even when the promotion of the tourism industry in Malaysia was at its infancy stage. Penang has already seen an influx of backpackers mainly from Europe and America visiting this exotic state, especially the island. In those days, the enclaves around Chulia Street and Batu Ferringhi have been home to many budget hotels and remains so up to this very day.
Today there are more of these hotels and most of them are widely spread out. This is the testimonial as travellers find them not only value for money but also its strategic location which is usually a stone's throw from Penang's major historical landmarks and tourist attractions. Some of these hotels are from restoration and refurnishing of old colonial bungalows, pre-war houses and estate homes. Some of them still have the original mosaic-tiled flooring, intricate artwork and inner courtyard and the wooden shuttered windows. This type of accommodation gives the travellers a more homely and cosy feeling and even the landlords are very helpful and friendly. It gives the guest a more captivating stay at their premises. Best of all, they are cheaper!
The Cathay Hotel, an all brilliant white colonial building gives their guests an experience of mesmeric colonial-style living with moderately priced, clean and comfortable air-conditioned rooms. This building definitely has a charm and character of its own that one will not find in any star hotel. Other guesthouse that can give you such enthralling experience of colonial-style living are The Hutton Lodge (at Hutton Lane), 100 Cintra Street Hotel (at Cintra Street), Travellers Lodge (at Muntri Street), Old Penang GuestHouse (at Love Lane), Olive Spring Hotel (at Chulia Street) and Blue Diamond Hotel (at Chulia Street). These premises were all previously colonial mansions, buildings or pre-war shop houses that are converted into charming and easy going accommodation for the budget conscious travellers. They provide basic amenities like clean linen and duvets, towels and simple breakfast but not all have attached toilets in every room. Most, if not all will have TVs and internet connection in the lounge. Further out of the city centre, is the Paramount Hotel that gives you the old Penang charm. Located in the millionaire row it is tucked in between rows of old mansion which was once owned by a tycoon.
Not all budget hotels are housed in old colonial buildings. There are many available in newer buildings with Broadway Budget Hotel located right in Little India, Friendship Motel in Penang Street, Good Hope Inn Penang (very near Gurney Drive) and YMCA of Penang Hostel. All of them are conveniently located along bus routes and right in the centre of attractive sites.
For those back packers who prefer a relaxing stay at the beaches of Batu Ferringhi, there are some clean and affordable accommodations too. A simple room will cost around RM30.00 per person. Some rooms come fitted with air conditions and attached bathroom or common standard room with ceiling fan and shared bathroom. Ali’s Ferringhi Guest House is an affordable budget accommodation for anyone. The rooms are single, double or family-size, all furnished and some with air conditioning or fan and attached bathroom. This budget hotel is on the bus route and the alighting place would be at the post office. A well maintained guest house would be the ET Budget Guesthouse with all of its room fully equipped with mosquito nets. The others are Shalini's Guest House, Ah Beng Guest House, Baba's Guest House and Ismail's Beach Guest House which are all close by to each other.
We can see that there are numerous budget hotels located all over in Penang, with some strategically located and some a little far out of town. I am sure travellers will find one that suits their budget. Here are the locations of some budget hotels, guest house and motels:
George Town
Seberang Prai
Hillside and Others
